Job Description:
A welder for a coal washery is responsible for fabricating, installing, and repairing metal components of the plant's machinery and structures, primarily focusing on coal and ash handling systems. This role requires specialized skills in various welding techniques, blueprint interpretation, and strict adherence to mine safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Fabrication and Repair: Join, fabricate, and repair various metallic frames, structures, pipelines, and machinery parts, such as conveyors, chutes, and pressure vessels, using appropriate welding techniques.
- Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain a variety of welding equipment (MIG, TIG, arc, flux-core) and manual tools (saws, grinders, torches, plasma cutters).
- Technical Interpretation: Read and interpret complex blueprints, technical drawings, specifications, and welding symbols to plan layouts and procedures.
- Quality Assurance: Inspect and test welded surfaces and structures to ensure they meet quality standards and specifications, checking for flaws, cracks, or deformities.
- Material Management: Prepare materials by cutting, grinding, and cleaning metal surfaces, and select appropriate filler metals and equipment based on material type and job requirements.
- Safety and Compliance: Strictly follow all health, safety, and environmental guidelines in a mining or industrial environment, including using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and following mine-specific safety codes of practice.
- Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on welding machines and troubleshoot equipment issues to ensure a safe and operational condition.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Experience: Proven experience as an industrial welder, with specific experience in coal & ash handling systems or power plant maintenance environments being highly desirable.
- Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in various welding techniques and procedures (e.g., MIG, TIG, Arc, SMAW, GMAW, FCAW).
- Certifications: Professional certification, such as an AWS welding certificate (American Welding Society) or similar, is often preferred.
- Physical Stamina: The role requires physical strength, manual dexterity, and the ability to work in various conditions, including confined spaces, at heights, and in dirty, noisy environments.
- Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot issues and ensure structurally sound repairs and fabrication.
- Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with fabricators, fitters, engineers, and other on-site personnel.
