Job Description:
An IT assistant provides technical support to users, maintains computer hardware and software, and assists with network administration and system maintenance. Key duties include troubleshooting issues, installing and configuring systems, monitoring networks, and managing user accounts and documentation. Strong technical, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential for this role.
Core responsibilities
- Technical Support: Provide first-level technical assistance to end-users for hardware, software, and network problems through a help desk or direct support.
- Installation and Configuration: Install, configure, and maintain computer hardware, software applications, and peripherals.
- System and Network Maintenance: Monitor and maintain computer systems and networks, including regular updates, patches, and security protocols.
- User Management: Set up new user accounts and manage user permissions and profiles.
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve technical issues in a timely manner.
- Documentation: Create and maintain accurate documentation for IT processes, procedures, and inventory.
Additional duties
- Assist with IT projects and upgrades.
- Ensure data backups are performed correctly.
- Provide training to staff on new technologies and software.
- Communicate with vendors for contract negotiation and procurement.
- Help develop contingency plans for network failures.
Qualifications and skills
- Education: An associate's or bachelor's degree in Information Technology or a related field is often required.
- Experience: Previous experience in a technical support or IT assistant role is preferred.
- Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of computer systems, networks, operating systems (like Windows and Linux), and common software applications is crucial.
- Soft Skills: Excellent problem-solving, communication, and customer service skills are essential.
- Certifications: Certifications such as CompTIA A+ are a plus.
